BUILDING A SAFE REFUGE FOR WOMEN & CHILDREN
What We’re Doing
Years ago, I bought a 2-acre land to build a safe space for women needing safe space in my village, Marimanti, Kenya. We plan to build Karibu Women’s & Children’s Home to provide emergency accommodation. This will also act as an empowerment to the women and the community.
We have completed the first stage of the shelter where we have successfully built an underground cement water tank that will store approximately 150,000 litres of clean water for use.
The next stage is constructing a borehole next to the tank to pump clean water into the tank and store it for use. Fresh water was found
approximately 180 meters down and this is a challenge to reach. However, with determination, I believe this will also be achieved. We
will have the filters to ensure that the water accessed is as safe as possible for human consumption. The water will save long distances
and alleviate communicable diseases acquired through drinking water from the creek that is contaminated.
The final stage will be building of a womens shelter to provide accommodation, food and skills to empower women to support themselves and their children.
